5.2.4. Removal and installation of a steering column

ATTENTION After removal from the car the steering column becomes extremely susceptible to damages. You watch to dropping a column as at the same time the steering shaft can be deformed or be weakened landing of plastic pins which support a column. Any damage can affect operability of a column.

Disconnect a wire from a negative conclusion of the rechargeable battery.

ATTENTION Never leave a steering column assembled in vertical position on a steering wheel with the removed module an inflatable safety cushion. It can become the trauma reason.

Disconnect system of passive safety.

Remove a steering wheel, see. "Removal and installation of a steering wheel".

If it is necessary to remove a contact spiral and/or the combined switch, remove them, see. "Removal and installation of a contact spiral and the combined switch".

Remove the lower panel of a steering column 1 (fig. 5.11).

Unscrew screws of a cover of a steering column 1 (fig. 5.12).

Separate the top facing steering columns 2 from lower 3, then remove facings (fig. 5.12).

Disconnect sockets 1 from the combined switch 2 (fig. 5.20).

Disconnect sockets 1 from the switch of ignition of 2 (fig. 5.21).

For cars with the automatic transmission, disconnect a cable of blocking of switching 1 from the ignition switch, at the same time the switch of ignition has to be in the family way of "ACC" (fig. 5.22).

After that transfer the ignition switch to the provision of "LOCK" (fig. 5.22).

Disconnect the socket of a sound signal (black) and the socket of an inflatable safety cushion (yellow) 1 from a plait of the dashboard (fig. 5.14).

Uncover the elastic coupling of steering.

Make adjusting tags 1 on a shaft 2 and the hinge of the lower shaft of steering of 3 (fig. 5.23).

Weaken a bolt (from a steering column) 4 and turn off a bolt (from a shaft) 5, disconnect the lower shaft of steering 3 from a shaft of 2 (fig. 5.23).

Turn off nuts of fastening of a steering column ("A", "B") (fig. 5.24).

Remove a steering column from the car.

ATTENTION Do not sort a steering column. If the column or a shaft have damages, replace a column assembled.

If it is necessary to remove the ignition switch with the anti-theft device, remove it.

Make sure that forward wheels and a steering wheel are in provision of the rectilinear movement.

ATTENTION After an inhaling of nuts of fastening of a steering column, it is necessary to tighten shaft hinge bolts. The wrong sequence of an inhaling can lead to damage of the hinge of a shaft.

If the ignition switch with the anti-theft device was removed, establish it into place.

At installation of a new steering column assembled, put an adjusting tag to the same place where it was on the removed steering column.

Tighten fastening nuts the nominal force of an inhaling as "A" - "B", as shown in the figure 5.24.

Moment of an inhaling of nuts of fastening of a steering column (a): 14 N · m.

Establish the lower shaft 2 in a hollow shaft 3 according to the tags 4 made before removal.

Tighten bolts 1 as it should be "C"-"D", as shown in the figure 5.25, the nominal force of an inhaling.

Moment of an inhaling of bolts of the hinge of a steering shaft (b): 25 N · m.

Establish a cover of the elastic coupling of steering.

For cars with the automatic transmission, connect a cable of blocking of switching 1 to the ignition switch, at the same time the switch of ignition has to be in the family way of "ACC". Then transfer the ignition switch to the provision of "LOCK" (fig. 5.26).

If the contact spiral and the combined switch were removed, establish them into place.

Connect the following sockets disconnected at removal:

– ignition switch;

– the combined switch;

– sound signal.

Establish the top and lower facings of a steering column 2, and fix by screws 1 (fig. 5.12).

Establish a steering wheel.

Install the lower panel of a steering column 1 (fig. 5.11).

Include system of passive safety.

Connect a wire to a negative conclusion of the rechargeable battery.

NOTE Cars after road accident with damages of a body and a steering column (or with the worked inflatable safety cushion), can have damages or violations of adjustment of a steering column.
